  • We are tutoring with Mrs. Lyons and we LOVED the bubble gum facts. However, we have a question. How is the oldest gum 9000 years old when it wasn’t invented until 1850? We did the math and that would have made gum invented 165 years ago. Also, what is the reasoning behind chewing gum keeping you from crying while cutting onions!
    Thanks for making us think!!

    • Gum was used a looonnngg time ago to freshen people’s breath. They used chicle, mastic, or birch bark. It wasn’t really the “chewing gum” we think of today – THAT was invented around 1850. The chopping onions thing sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t. For some people, the motion of the jaw can suppress the muscle in your eye that produces tears. Thanks for asking and thanks for reading!!
